A Late Christmas Post
Monday, December 27, 2004
i was supposed to have post this on the eve of december 24, but i wasn't able to have access to the net at home.. so i guess this is a bit too late, but nonetheless i hopee this is not yet too late a greeting. on a sidenote i just had this painful toothed extracted and i'm off to church camp for tommorow until the 30th so i hope this post is worth something. thanks. merry christmas.

I would try not to claim authority or even authenticity for what is stated here but nonetheless I swear that what I'm posting here is quite true if looked at with an open mind to critical observation.

Christmas would probably be over if not has not yet started or is already in progress by the time that you've come to read this confusing paragraph. But season is not that of importance it is the reality of what is being signified.

I once remember how I attended a service at church where the pastor spoke of the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ by setting the tone with an alternative song that became quite popular when I was still in 2nd year high school, it was Joan Osbourne's 'One of Us".

Theologically speaking (in a Christian, admirer of C.S. Lewis' perspective that is) the song lacks depth in what we could say as firsthand knowledge on what the Bible says about God. But true enough the question is a valid one.

Indeed what if God really was one of us?

This speaks of how man has long been searching to fill that God-shaped void in their hearts that's been longing to be filled since the ancient of days (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Now what then indeed God was one of us?

To start with in a logical sense the question is quite not likely to be valid since if we then acknowledge that there is then a God, then that God which we acknowledge would validate that He is God since he created us right?

Now what then am I trying to drive at then the above given statement would mean that we are under the notion that we are first of all created beings right?

Therefore if we were created beings then it would mean that we have a Creator, right?

If you then agree with me that God is our creator then could it be logically possible that the creator would be quite the same as its creation?

Even the science of cloning would make no such claim, because the creator is highly superior than their creation since in the first place the creations existence is dependent on the creator's act of invention.

It would then be more valid (I guess) that the question would be better implied to whether God: "Is like one of us" rather than "one of us".

This discussion would go on under the presumption that we are both in agreeable terms that God is in existence and that His existence could be proven in Scripture (since I have no time to argue and prove to skeptics, atheists and agnostics of His existence.) After all this is about Christmas in the first place and mostly those who adhere and profess their belief in the Christian faith celebrate Christmas wherein I also belong to.

Let us look at the lyrics further and see what it says shall we?

God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with him
In all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that
you would have to believe
in things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints
and all the prophets
Trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

When looked at closely the song speaks of how the singer speaks of how God is deemed as such a distant and impersonal God by organized religion. And speaks of how perhaps by some stroke of possibility God is in a way undergoing and living such an ordinary life as we have.

Well the question is profound and I cannot claim or at the least answer it in a way that it would make sense (even to myself) but I have here something that we could consider.

The Bible speaks of a person named Jesus who was God incarnate the second person in the Trinity (John 1:1, 1:14; Col. 2:9) who came to earth to finish the work mankind's redemption from the wages of sin. (Rom. 6:23,5:8 ; Heb.2:9)

Furthermore the gospels speak of His coming which was made possible by His virgin birth, and that in itself speaks of how he was borne out of a person, he was there since creation but he chose to become man so that he could reestablish his broken fellowship with his lost creation. (John 3:16, Rom. 5:12, 5:8).

I know to somewhat I'm saying might not be making any sense but true enough the question posed by the song is quite valid and needs to be addressed.

Yes indeed God became one of us, but not so as to know how it feels to be like one of us but rather it is to die for us and give us life everlasting if we'd chose to receive Him and enter into our lives. (Christ, by highest Heav’n adored; Christ the everlasting Lord; Late in time, behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;Hail th’incarnate Deity, Pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel. Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die. Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. - Hark The Herald Angels Sing, 2nd & 3rd Stanzas, Charles Wesley)

You see its what makes Christmas special its the fact that God indeed became like one of us in order to restore His broken relationship with us that we in the first place broke of with Him. (Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface, Stamp Thine image in its place: Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in Thy love. Let us Thee, though lost, regain, Thee, the Life, the inner man: O, to all Thyself impart, Formed in each believing heart, - Hark The Herald Angels Sing, 5th Stanza, Charles Wesley).

You see the song indeed poses a rhetorical question and this in some could be said:

God had a name what would it be? - Jesus Christ
And would you call it to his face? - Yes. (1. Cor. 1:2)
If you were faced with him
In all his glory -
yes the Bible says I can confindently face His glory (Heb.4:14-16)
What would you ask if you had just one question - what must I do to be saved (Acts 16:30, take not that the following verse tells of the answer
And yeah, yeah, God is great - yes indeed He is
Yeah, yeah, God is good
- Yes because life everlasting is made possible when He chose to become like one of us.

To end let us take the chance to ask ourselves this question:
"Have I come to the saving knowledge of having a relationship with God by accepting Him as my Lord & Savior?"

I believe that it is fitting to ask this of ourselves since this is that time of the year that we take joy at the coming of Jesus as a wee babe here on earth to die for us so that we may have eternal life.

The Bible says that if we confess with our mouth "Jesus is Lord" and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead we shall be saved, (Rom. 10:9-10, John 1:12).

May I ask if you are willing to enter that relationship and invite Jesus into your life?

If your answer is yes please follow the following prayer:

"Dear Jesus, I know I have sinned against you. I confess that I am a sinner. I accept the sacrifice you made on the cross on my behalf. I ask you to come into my heart. Please cleanse me of my sin. And give me eternal life. I repent from my sins and put my trust in You. Thank you Jesus. Amen." (Courtesy of CARM.ORG)

What you prayed above is not some complex formula of a magical prayer it is simply an act of sincerely admitting our present condition to God and acknowledge our need for Him to enter into our life. If you prayed that prayer with all your heart this is a time for you to celebrate because Rom. 10:13, says that for whoever calls on the Lord will be saved.

I guess it is but fitting for us to ponder on this thought by reading this verse from the hymn Joy To The World by Isaac Watts and this is where I will end.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

God may not be one of us but he became of us and not only that he also came so that we could be given the right to be His children. Truly Jesus Christ is Our Savior from the cradle to the grave. Merry Christmas.

why celebrate christmas?
Thursday, December 23, 2004
A few days ago I stumbled upon a program of the INC, speaking of why 'christians. (pertaining to members of their sect) ought not to celebrate Christmas.
They argue that there is no mention of a command by God The Father (whom they acknowledge as the only true God, that is superior than Jesus, because to them Jesus is just a man since they don't subscribe to the orthodox Godhead that is defined in the Bible as the Trinity), and they concluded that since there is no biblical basis for such therefore it is not to be celebrated, another is that they emphasized as much as other groups that oppose Biblical Christianity that it is the Roman Catholics that invented the said celebration.
Well I have no arguments with them on the statement that its not commanded in the Bible, yes indeed the Bible does not command us to do so there are only two commandments that the Bible tells us to follow Communion and Water Baptism. But true enough there are also no commandments that tells us not to celebrate the Savior's birth and not to remember Jesus Christ. However we must understand that Philippians 2:9 records the fact that the Father exalted Jesus and given Him a name which is above every name. Let us also desire to exalt Jesus in every opportunity that we have and celebrating Christmas is one of them.
As for the allegations that Roman Catholics invented it well, I may have my reservations towards Romanists as well and based on what Church history tells us that the early Christians had celebrated it as early as 90 AD. and the organized Latin Christians (Roman Catholics) started in 313 AD so as to rival pagan feastivities. It goes to show that way before the advent of Roman Catholicism early Christians have already commemorated it.
Its also worth putting into account that those who promote the boycott of not celebrating Christmas to their members is the fact that instead of preaching love, joy and hope during the Holiday season, they preach hatred and disdain.
Lastly is that Christ is to be remembered not only during the Christmas season but the commemoration of His birth is also a time where it ought to be given emphasis on how we should re-evaluate our lives so as to understand the extent of what was given to us in Bethlehem some to 2 thousand years ago, another is that its our motives that count more as we celebrate Christmas rather than that of the rituals and above that commercial hype and the other good things that which a number of us give a high regard to during Christmas. Another is that celebrating Christmas is also an oportune time for evangelism because it arouses people who've not yet come close to Christ to ask that question of why it is important and why is the birth of Jesus a turning point in history in which the direction of history is now divided from BC to AD.
So why celebrate Christmas you ask?
I say why not?

Chirstmas Is Cheap

First things first.
This is a purely biased reflection at something that I know a lot of people love. I know I might offend a lot or might give one the impression that I am a moralist or a fanatic of sorts. So to save ourselves the angst and the bitter hearts and the ill will and the deathwishes and the like I advise you to rather not read this if you are in love with the leisure of drinking alcohol but if you're open-minded enough to read an outsiders point-of-view I encourage you to please read on.

Christmas cheers is cheap.
Want to know why?
Because it eludes the underlying concept not so as to hide (better yet shield,) it from would-be persecutors like it was then in ancient of days. But because so much is caught up in its intoxicating spirit of having an excuse to be rowdy.
Sad to say what is fun is not always what a thing or for this occassion the true meaning of the day that we're trying to commemorate. I'm not against it, don't get me wrong. I'm all for the cheers, the carols, the gift giving, the unilateral cry for 'peace on earth and goodwill to men', the reunions, Christmas lights, trees and lanterns but what I'm against is the loss of significance for the concept where every single one of those stuff that I've mentioned above stand for.
It's really evident that Christmas nowadays speak of Santa Claus and his reindeers and of The Grinch who once tried to destroyed it because he utterly failed to understand its meaning or that of silly and at times far fetched TV commercials that sees this season as a free-for-all to cash in on the holidays and most prevailent among the lot is that of the San Miguel Beer 12 Days of Christmas ad, which I'd like us to have close look at.
I tried to get the lyrics of the jingle but was saddened that I cannot grab my copy, too bad.
Anyways the lyrics focuses on various pulutan dishes that can be served in-season and out-of-season but are of festive appeal which a lot of families serve during Christmas time which ironically used also by a lot of seasonal/occassional alcohol drinkers as an excuse to drink.
(if you can't catch the drift read this: "Di ako lasenggero umiinom lang naman ako pag may okasyon" and apparently everysingle day an occassion can be found I at times wonder if they'd pop up lines like thins: "Umiinom ako pag may okasyon lang at dahil ngayon ay lunes may okasyon ngayon eto ang start ng weekdays kaya iinom ako dahil monday ngayon its a cause for celebration ipagdiwang natin ang lunes.")
Not only is the festive mood and emphasis on the dishes and the excuse to drink but also the fact that the ad emphasizes on how they're all compatible with a cold San Miguel beer.
The choice of song is even quite an insult for the original song is a crytic cathecism during the dark age of church apostasy led by Roman christianity. The song signifies essential truths and doctrines to which the gifts in the song represents so as for adult Christians could teach their kids these doctrinal truths without being branded as heretics by their clergy.
The first line:
"A partridge in a pear tree. " signifies Christ, and the tree that of the old rugged cross on which he died to save us.
And for it to be replaced by a: "Isang malamig na San Miguel Beer." is tantamount to heresy if you ask me.
(there is a good post about this song in pinaybloodrush by the way. )
If you are ofended I cannot do anything about it this is just an opinion, but I do truly stand that celebrations could be celebrated without having to intoxicate ourselves with unhealthy food and alcohol.
Besides historically speaking its just a rather bland failed attempt to signify the true meaning of Christmas which the ad tries to imply. Yes its good to have a hearty meal, to share the company of friends and loved ones or even to have a party and the like.
But historically speaking the said event wasn't heralded with such joy and cheers there was a slaughter of children led by Herod, there was a mass migration, the protagonist can't even be given a descent bed to be born in and most of all the true reason for the protagonist that is Jesus Christ was born is that so that He would die and eventually complete the act of redemption.
Take a good look at that?
Would someone celebrate the birth of one who was born to die?
The common response would be no.
But what makes this special is that this was not some ordinary man who'd be born to eventually die. That's our state right now we are born to die someday. But this death is great because it did not end at the laying of the tombstone but ended with the ressurection and resulting with granting us the freedom to stare death in the eye and ask: "where o death is thy sting" (my apologies to the Apostle Paul for the unsolicited quote from his epistle to the church of Corinth).
It is true that Christmas is worth celebrating and the birth of Christ is a cause for celebration, but to cheapen it with the act of disregard to its meaning and to use it to celebrate and be rowdy and be drunk with alcohol deliberately deviates its true significance.
Another is that I believe none of us would truly be able to celebrate Christmas for all its worth not unless we have experienced the saving grace of God's love by accepting Jesus' completed work of salvation now the question stands: Have we come to recieve the said gift?

there is not so much as a reason to whine but i really need to get out this scrutiny is no longer within my normal width of tolerance. its existence is now but a parasite to my sanity. it negates what i consider as the muse of my intellect. its conceptual deprivation. its inhumane, its but a spectacle, and i think i've been fooling myself for the last couple of posts that i've whined and bled my heart in the words that i've written in previous posts. holiday spirits are low because its reality is still overshadowed by the demand of production required of my superiors. their charade of gift giving is even affecting my production and they cannot justify it to their even higher and mightier superiors. how long have i been playing this stupid game of airing out m greif and not do anything about it. maybe i just can't live up to what i've done for this job in the past, but there's a logical reason to not live up to such expectations since people change and change is imminent, now no wonder they're so shell shocked and its really just an issue of me no longer meeting that 'quota' that they required because the source of my workload no longer sends as much and they'd end up giving me another person's job. multi-tasking has been a pain in the high-knee really. whoever invented it ought to be crowned the king of slave drivers. to be fair with them i admit that i'm no longer really giving it my best, perhaps my reasons for doing so are not quite valid or would even be irrelevant. i've count the cost already. if it be justice that i'd be kicked out or sacked then fine. it it would mean that then again would mean that this would lead to me being more or less another unemployed slob at home maybe that then would be fair. i'm just so pissed off right now because i have yet to see any shred of evidence that everyone in here is considered by its system as nothing more than 'labor force,' 'manpower', an 'employee' a member of the 'staff', a 'worker' or nonetheless a 'human resource' a 'commodity' or an expendible 'asset' or better yet as i've said so in the past as cattle, (maybe we ought to start wearing bells on our necks now) and not so much as an individual human being that has a life other than work and a reason for working that is other than earning a buck and buying stuff with our salaries. is this what humanity has gone to? if it is then no wonder were slowly going down the drain. this is the last year that i'd be here next year its bye bye to this luminous flourescent dungeon.
on a lighter side, just last week i've finished setting up my deviantART page and if ever you'd be interested in visiting it simply scroll down and go to the sections directory of my sidebar and click on the link that says portfolio or simply click here

all the more reason to prove punk of its value that goes beyond the mowhawk and the studs
Friday, December 17, 2004
its quite hectic here right now there's this sort of a party here at the office and everyone is somewhat busy in dressing themselves up into something that they thought would be 'punk'.
that's the theme.
it's quite ironic that a few years back i looked at myself as a punk. but i must say that i no longer see myself as one. i grew up and somehow the angst of my adolescence have dwindled into something that is more mellow or something to that effect.
people right now are so into this 'punk' thing eversince the sudden emergence of avril, sp, and the like into the mainstream and eversince thrast, skate, goth and punk fashion has been the latest 'in' thing among designers and fashion models. and this is not quite surprising since i myself was a fruit of a subtle punk revival back in 1994 or was it 1993?
well anyways to sum it up there was nivrana, greenday, the offspring among others and listening to them introduced me to a lot of other unknown and unstrung heroes of primal music and emotional woes and about alienation, anarchy and honest to goodness music fueled by pure passion.
its quite sad that its that big now and that it no longer represents what the punk movement of the late 1970s in the UK and New York as well as the Hardcore, emo and Oi resurgence in the 80s not even close to that of the grunge outbreak. its just a bland commercial version created by the corporate mainstream media to cater to the post grunge generation of bratpackers who've somehow reconciled revolution and consumerism as well as enjoy that kindred friendship of rap and rock nowadays.
i'm sad that i've departed from that but nonetheless i myself cannot claim that i was really a punk in a sense yeah sure i grew up loitering at Tandem Cinema in Recto, I became part of the radical circles of student activism and countercultural niches that circled on anarchism, i skated aggressively, wore torn clothes, studs, safety pins, badges, buttons and patches, made zines and participated in various diy gigs and even sang for a punk band but i could not claim to be truly punk at heart looking i never really had that much reason to rebel other than that youthful idealistic side of me to make a difference in such an affluent society that revolved around the notions of routine and thought up standards of aesthetics given by those who now hold on to the powers that be. others have more valid reasons i do not have one, but i share a kindred association with their expression of angst and continue to relish the memories and lessons that have played their part in what i am now.
it sucks to think that the very establishment that punk rock has always been fighting against has captured and re-packaged 'punk' or the notion of punk from an outsiders perspective into what it is not.
to be close enough is to be completely wrong.

If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We can reduce the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits."

and i thought this day would pass by without me writing a post...

...then again i'm proven wrong.

this is just a sudden burst of emotional distress towards what i've just read from someone and here's what i think with what i've just read from that person:

time is a good way to determine one's priorities and an answer to what really matters to someone that makes them go out despite the inconvinience. the question then stands to what then is our priority?

i'm off.

i have a train to catch.

i was quite surprised yesterday that i got a text message from bong of philippine violators & rmd, you see earlier i contacted rotten at his blog inquiring if ever pay it forward could support them for their gigs a week ago. and up until yesterday there wasn't a reply from rotten when suddenly yesterday afternoon i got a txt from bong saying this:

i must say that i was caught by surprise but somehow i wasn't able to reply because i'm flat broke i don't have a load in my cel and right now i even skipped lunch because i can't afford to buy one. so i hope if in any case bong or rotten could read this now. the answer is a unanimous yes.

Tuesday, December 07, 2004
This has been something that has been puzzling me for quite sometime now since just this morning I tried to write down every single record that I've owned eversince I started collecting tapes and CDs and this is but a partial list but sad to say that majority of them are either with a friend's friend or MIA or broken or just a record sleeve in my tape rack... hopefully there's the net where I can rummage through the web searching for their mp3s but its really sad to think of how much of the collection has been lost. Take note this excludes my mix tapes as well as burned CDs and Filipino records.

in the long run i still have a long way to go
Monday, December 06, 2004
i know this is quite very much the way i am.
i always tend to whine and bicker and moan about the "how's" and the "why's" and the "why me" scenarios that are often read in this blog. it ought to be lessened if not removed i guess. and it looks as though like i still have a long way to go...

quite like it the weekends was also somewhat cool for me since it was started with a deep and long conversation with xander about some personal stuff that we both would like to resolve with our christian walk. another is the fact that i was able to spend the better part of the saturday resting and watching two movies in cable as well as in the video player. the latter part was spent on picking up bringing a bundle of stacked up old newspapers at pule's which we along with laix dropped off at church for the newspaper drive to raise funds for this church camp.

sunday was also cool since i spent the better part of the day at church where i learned a lot about our church when put into an analogy to the church of ephesus which was addressed in the second chapter of the book of revelations. the afternoon was spent with jeanie and her family and was latter concluded with me getting home and then sleeping the remainder of the afternoon until 8pm or so.
now i'm struggling with this blasted toothache that's been torturing me for a couple of days now. that's it i suppose i have to get back to work.

its quite ironic that i am here at work today. the government declared yesterday that there are to be no classes on all levels as well as no work on offices because of the plague of rain showers and strong winds brought about by this typhoon. this declaration was announced by none other than the president herself. its intresting that certain companies such as this one that i am working for would rather risk the lives of their employees so as to earn a quick buck rather than comply with what the government says about the safety of the civilians. it really sucks.
another is that i am feeling quite jaded right now that there are friends and brothers in the faith that are apparently slacking off with their spiritual life that kind of raises my concern. they seem to: (as i'd quote in Hebrews 10:24-25)
"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
have been that of the latter as those who are in the habit of not taking such advantage of the fellowship that they have and can freely partake with their kindred spirits in Christ. i'd be talking to them later and i hope that God will speak to their hearts.
i know that i'm also quite in this period where i'm feeling weary and at times very whining about the way things are and i hope that those of you who are reading this would take the time to pray for me.
its off for the weekends for now...

here are a couple of compositions that i guess would be worth reading in any case just feel free to comment...
Personal Doxology
You've set me apart. You rescued me. You gave me a new life. Kept me close to your heart. I'm saved by your grace. Bought by your blood. Can't help but be thankful. For all that you've done. You gave me a new song. To sing from the top of my lungs. You said in your word. That you'll never... Never let me go. I'm justified. I'm sanctified. I'm living a life to glorify. All the honor and glory. That you deserve.

New Found Sense Of Worth
I feel so lost. But now I'm found. Looking back at where we've been and from. What you did I cannot grasp. What is logical you put to shame. I think I kind of get it now. It's an act of love. That transcends human understanding. Your love is amazing. Selfless and everlasting. It's beyond. Anyone has ever given unto me. I can't help but want. To return the favor back to you my God. I can't help but want. To give my very all to you my God. Troubles still come along my way. But you're with me every single day. My human nature stumbles me. But you are there to break my fall. Seeing me through it all. Not letting go. Through the worse that this world might give us.

i'm not quite sure what this is about

vauge thoughts now fills this head of mine...
quite sure how to make sense out of what aches this head...
not really in a mood
to write a post that would make sense....
nevertheless its
just a phase or so i guess...
maybe now is a good
opportunity to reflect as an atmosphere of darkness envelopes the skies...

in the months that have come and gone
Wednesday, December 01, 2004
by mid october i was already starting to worry that i might have all but loss my drive to post stuff in my blog. i wasn't funcitoning quite like i used to pertaining to that, i thought maybe it was just fatigue or an enormous workload, or office boredom, anxiety or whatever. october was a loss of creativity on my part and not to mention a prelude to a tiring week of decease that i got which lasted up until the first week of november.
november got to start quite the same as that of october a few posts every now and then short 'activity-of-the-day' summary posts. but the funny thing is that i guess the r&r that i got from my sickness once again got me into reading and a lot of time into thinking which eventually manifested itself in the posts that i entered for the month.
for the regular visitors who've been supportive starting on day one you may have noticed that i compile some posts that i have apparently found to be worthy of one's reading and this is just keeping up with that tradition. i know that i am not that much of a good writer nor that much of a cultural authority on things but i hope the following posts would be found interesting by those who've ever gotten the chance at reading them.
